Newcastle

Newcastle is located in the north-east of England, on the River Tyne, which runs between Newcastle and the adjacent town, Gateshead. Newcastle has an excellent shopping centre, a range of historic landmarks and an energetic nightlife.

Attractions

Often used as the symbol for Newcastle, the 'blinking eye' or Millennium Bridge is a magnificent work of architecture that spans the River Tyne in the heart of Newcastle and has won several architectural awards since its opening in 2001.

The Angel of the North is a twenty-metre high monument on the way into Tyneside, which is an immensely popular tourist attraction. A short drive from Newcastle city centre are the Beamish Open Air Museum and Hadrian’s Wall.

Shopping

The two main parts of Newcastle dedicated to shopping are Eldon Square and Eldon Gardens. Eldon Square is home to mainstream British chain stores, while its classy sister shopping centre Eldon Gardens has a range of independent and designer boutiques to cater for more expensive tastes.

There is an excellent indoor market – Grainger Market – just off Grainger Street in the centre of the city. The Metro Centre in Gateshead (just outside Newcastle) is a huge, internationally famous shopping centre, with just about every chain store the dedicated shopper could need.

Newcastle has clubs for every genre of music imaginable, as well as a multitude of live venues. The main locations for nightlife are The Gate, which is home to some excellent clubs and bars; Jesmond, where there are lots of street cafés and bars; and Quayside, where you will find a wide range of places to eat and drink.
