Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a modern, cosmopolitan city situated in the heart of Germany. It is the banking and financial centre of Germany. However, although typically known as a place for work and business, there is much more to Frankfurt, and there are plenty of places to go and things to see for tourists.

Attractions

A definite must for book lovers is the Frankfurt Book Fair, which is the largest book fair in the world, featuring presentations and readings on a huge range of books. Frankfurt is also home to the excellent German Film Museum, the Dom St. Bartholomäus (which contains the Dom Museum), and the Museum of Modern Art.

Shopping

The most famous shopping area of Frankfurt is the Zeil, where a range of clothing and departmental stores can be found. For designer shops or boutiques head to Schillerstrasse or Goethestrasse. Frankfurt is home to several markets, from the flea market in Alt-Sachsenhausen; to the groceries and other goods sold in Rossmarkt and Kleinmarkthalle.

Nightlife and Eating out

There are several festivals in Frankfurt. The Mainfest in August is essentially a carnival offering activities for all the family. Music lovers will enjoy the Sound of Frankfurt Festival, which holds performances from over 70 artists over 12 hours. Most bars in Frankfurt are situated around Alt-Sachsenhausen, and for the more energetic, a large number of clubs can be found in the Zeil and Bleichstrasse.

There are a number of restaurants serving traditional German fare, which consists of various types of sausage, sauerkraut and other meat dishes. Eating out here can be expensive due to the high numbers of business visitors. The best place to visit for cheaper cuisine is the area between Rathenauplatze and Opernplatze. Bockenheim, the student district, is full of cheap restaurants serving international cuisine.
