Agen started out as a port on the River Garonne; since the industrial revolution it has become a primarily agricultural town, producing plums and prunes. It is situated halfway between Toulouse and Bordeaux in the southwest of France. Although initially not an impressive town, Agen is home to some beautiful buildings such as the Cathédrale St-Caprais. Places of interest to visit are the Musée municipal des Beaux-Arts, and the Saturday morning market in the beautifully cultivated Le Gravier Public Gardens.
The closest tourist airport is Bordeaux's Aéroport de Bordeaux Mérignac, about an hour's drive away.

Your Comments on Agen, France
I love Agen. The city centre is a wonderful mix of the old and some of the new. The covered market is quite fabulous (mornings only) and there are many excellent restaurants. For preference, the Station Restaurant, even advertised in the Eurostar magazine as being well worth the journey is a delight, just to sample the delights of this excellent establishment; however, book ahead for an evening meal. For Brits, this is NOT a British Rail type establishment. Travel out of town to Puymerol, a delightful bastide village and in Agen, find the time to walk over the bridge that carries the Deux Meres canal (Canal du Midi beyond Toulouse) over the mighty Garonne.
