Montego Bay

Montego Bay is situated on the northwest coast of Jamaica and is the country’s most popular tourist destination. Previously a Spanish colony, the name Montego Bay is believed to derive from the Spanish word manteca, meaning ‘lard’, as such products were exported from the port. Attractions

Rose Hall is an impressive house, and at the time of its construction was believed to be the most beautiful dwelling on the island. It fell into disrepair, but in the 1960s this striking building was gradually restored. Guided tours are readily available for those unafraid of the legend of the White Witch of Rose Hall; a local myth later documented in a novel by H.G. de Lisser. Greenwood was constructed by Sir Richard Barrett, cousin to the famous poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. A striking house, Greenwood is still occupied today, although the owners graciously allow guided tours to explore the house. Sir Barrett claimed that he owned the most substantial collection of antiques in the western world; upon entering his house one can appreciate that such a claim is entirely believable. A massive assortment astounds all who visit, and the building boasts other striking features such as an extensive family library, a fabulous ballroom and a breathtaking view.

Rockland’s Bird Feeding Station is a stunning location where many different species can be appreciated and fed. Most are extremely tame; handling such creatures is a memorable experience for all visitors. Nightingales, doves and hummingbirds can all be spotted here.
