Mexico City

The world’s third largest metropolis, Mexico City is an exciting, bustling, over-populated and infamously smog-ridden capital city. A place of contradictions, with colonial palaces, world-renowned museums, ancient ruins, skyscrapers and ever-growing slums, it is not for the faint-hearted, and is definitely a place where you will never get bored.

Attractions

The Plaza de la Constitucion, or Zocolo, is one of the largest public squares in the world. Here you will find the Cathedral Metropolitana, the Palacio Nacional (which holds many of Diego Rivera’s murals) and the remains of the Aztec Templo Mayor. The Zocolo is a busy bustling place, full of street stalls, buskers, performers and demonstrations.

The 'floating gardens' of Xochimilco are one of city’s highlights. Visitors can rent a punt to take them down the causeway, with mariachis providing entertainment, and food, drink and crafts being offered on waterborne stalls.

Bosque de Chapultepec, or Chapultepec Park is a vast green park with lakes, gardens, a zoo and a number of museums, located in the centre of the city. It is the place where Mexicans escape the pollution and bustle of the city, although at the weekends it gets so busy that it can be hard to move! One highlight is the Museo Nacional de Antropologia – one of the most famous museums in the world.

The pre-Christian urban centre of Teotihuacan is one of the most impressive ancient cities of the ancient world, and its 'Pyramid of the Sun' is one of the world’s largest. Situated 50km from Mexico City, it is well-worth a day trip.

Shopping

You can find goods from across the country in Mexico City, and there is certainly plenty to buy – in department stores, local markets, artisan stores and street stalls. Every area has its own market, but the Mercado de la Merced is Mexico City’s largest market, and worth a visit.

Crafts shops and antiques tend to be centred in the Zona Rosa and Polanco, where you can find jewellery, clothing, candles and art work, among other things. Try the Mercado de la Ciudadela for crafts from across the country.

The two largest department stores are El Palacio de Hierro and Liverpool, which offer designer fashion, and local designs. Sanborns is a good place to find English language books and souvenirs.

Nightlife and Eating Out

Mexico City is full of cafés, restaurants and taquerias, and prices range from a few pesos for a quick snack, to a hefty bill in a swanky restaurant. The variety of restaurants is huge, with a large range of international cuisine, from traditional Mexican and European to Japanese and Middle Eastern. The most popular places to eat are around the Zocolo for light meals and snacks, and for finer dining, the Zona Rosa and Condesa. Condesa is full of mid-range cafés and restaurants, and the Zona Rosa offers plenty of upmarket eateries.

The city’s nightlife is also very varied, although bars and events are often scattered across the metropolis, and can be difficult to find. The Zona Rosa and Condesa are where tourists tend to go out, and Polanco is the place to go for swanky bars and clubs. Mexicans love their live music - head to the Plaza Garibaldi to join the crowds watching mariachi competitions.

Airport

Mexico City’s airport, Aeropuerto Benito Juarez, is the main arrival destination for flights into Mexico. Over 20 US cities run scheduled flights into Mexico City. Many flights from Europe still fly via the USA, although some airlines, such as British Airways, do operate direct flights, with substantially shorter travel times. (A flight from London takes approximately 12 hours). You can also fly to numerous destinations throughout Mexico from here.

The airport itself is situated 15km (9 miles) from the Zocolo, and it takes roughly 45 minutes to get from the airport to the city centre by car.
