Charleston Sc

The second largest city in the state of South Carolina, Charleston was where the first shots in the American Civil War were fired. Originally called Charles Towne, named after Charles the 2nd, when it was founded in 1670, the city was an important port on the Atlantic coast, and a flourishing trading centre. Due to the presence of traders and slaves from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, Charleston became a cosmopolitan centre that rivalled New Orleans, and today its architecture, gardens, and museums have made Charleston a popular destination for tourists, with millions of people visiting each year.

Attractions

Charleston’s colonial past has meant that it is filled with historical landmarks and museums. The Old Exchange and Customs House is one of the most important colonial buildings in the United States, built by the British in 1771. It was used to imprison Patriots who signed the Declaration of Independence, and the ratification of the United States’ Constitution took place there. Drayton Hall is a plantation house dating back to the 18th century, built in the Palladian style, and is a designated National Historic Landmark. Other plantation houses that are worth a visit include the Edmonston-Alton House, the Nathaniel Russell House, Boone Hall, and the Aitken-Rhett House, which is the only remaining urban plantation house in Charleston.

Charleston Museum lays claim to being the country’s oldest museum, dating back to 1773, and its popular exhibits include artefacts from the Civil War, and Charleston silverware. The Gibbes Museum of Art is home to thousands of works of fine art, and the American Military Museum is dedicated to the United States Army, both past and present.

For history enthusiasts, Fort Sumter is situated on an island near Charleston’s harbour, and is famous for being the site of the first shots fired in the American Civil War. It is accessible by boat from Charleston Marina, with the journey taking approximately 30 minutes.

Shopping

Charleston has 2 large shopping centres, Citadel Mall and Northwoods Mall, which offer shoppers an array of branded goods and items. For specialist shops, CSA Galleries is a Civil War and Old South art and gift shop, and George C. Birlant and Co. is an established family-owned antiques shop.

Nightlife and Eating Out

The city is home to many restaurants that cater to all budgets and tastes. Some of the better-known establishments that offer good quality local cuisine include Peninsula Grill, Magnolia’s, 82 Queen, and Charleston Grill.

For other types of cuisine, some recommended restaurants are Sticky Fingers for Memphis-style dishes, 39 Rue de Jean for French cuisine, and Bocci’s for Italian food.

Many of Charleston’s bars are located in the Market Street area, and popular ones include Bar 145, The Library at Vendue Inn, and The Terrace. For live music, Indigo Lounge and Mezzane are worth a visit.

Charleston’s airport is located just over 10 miles outside the town, and is served only by domestic carriers. Most visitors will fly into larger international airports such as New York, Atlanta, or Houston, and then take a domestic flight into Charleston.
