Tower Bridge is one of the most recognisable sights of London. The distinctive Victorian drawbridge opens several times a day to allow tall ships to pass. The bridge is situated next to the Tower of London, which dates back to William the Conqueror’s eleventh century reign. The Tower is the permanent home to the magnificent Crown Jewels, which are on public display. Tours are available.
The Tower of London is one of the four World Heritage Sites in the city – the Palace of Westminster, Maritime Greenwich and Kew Gardens have also been awarded this status. The Westminster Parliament Buildings are located on the north side of the Thames, very close to Westminster Abbey. Big Ben, the landmark clock, is part of the Parliament buildings, which are home to the upper and lower houses of UK government.
During the summer, Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s impressive official residence, offers visitors a tour of its 19 state rooms. As well as boasting the largest private garden in London, the Palace is surrounded by greenery in the shape of St James’ Park (which is home to several friendly white pelicans) and Green Park, across The Mall.
Hyde Park and Regents Park are relatively peaceful green parks away from the hustle and bustle of central London. Slightly further afield, but well worth the trip, are Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park and Greenwich Park and Observatory, which all offer a retreat from the city, and fantastic views of London.
A walk along the South Bank of the Thames brings with it some of the most impressive sights of London. The London Eye is the largest observation wheel in the world, and a ‘flight’ in one of the transparent pods is a popular way to see the capital. Further along the bank is the National Film Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The Millennium Bridge (known as the ‘wobbly bridge’) and London Bridge both offer unrestricted views of Christopher Wren’s striking architectural design - St Paul’s Cathedral.
London also boasts several world-class museums, including the Tate Britain, Tate Modern, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and Science Museum.
Shopping
London rivals Paris and New York as one of the best shopping cities in the world. The city has over 40,000 shops. Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street are renowned for their combination of flagship high street stores and chic designer shops.If high street chains and designer prices do not appeal, visit one of London’s 80 markets. Covent Garden market offers unique hand crafted clothes and gifts, and the street performers – from circus acts to artists to musicians – always make it a shopping experience with a twist.
There is more to shopping in London than clothes. Borough Market, near London Bridge, is a favourite with celebrity chefs. Just taking in the astounding colourful array of fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, cake, fish and bread, is an experience in itself.
Columbia Road Flower Market is well known for filling the narrow road with striking bouquets, and hidden treasures can often be found at Portobello Road antiques market. Get haggling!
Nightlife and Eating Out
A staggering 22% of Britain’s restaurants are in London. All tastes are catered for – bustling Chinatown for good value oriental delicacies, Brick Lane for Indian cuisine, and Italian, French, American and English eateries on almost every corner of central London and the West End. For posh nosh, book a table at one of the 36 Michelin starred restaurants in the city.The West End is the capital’s theatre land. Offering a diverse selection of performances, every genre is covered - from musicals to operas, dramas to comedies. Discount tickets are available on the day of the show at the Leicester Square box office.
Like the range of food and shows, the bars and clubs in London are very varied. From gay bars to theme nights, cheesy clubs to comedy nights, there is a lot to discover. Soho is a good place to start, since it is very close to the West End and has a variety of nightspots to offer. The Ministry of Sound in south east London has a world famous reputation for its unique brand of dance music.

Heathrow Airport is situated 24km west of London. Ninety airlines use the airport, and fly to around 170 different destinations worldwide.Heathrow: 0870 000 0123

London City Airport is the only airport which is situated in London. It is just a few kilometres from the centre of the capital.
