La Coruna
The province of La Coruna occupies the far north-western corner of Spain and is one of Europe’s most important ports, the second largest in Spain. It is famed for being the port from which the Armada sailed in 1588.Attractions
La Coruna is a popular holiday resort and there are 2km of wide, white sandy beaches, the best being Santa Cristina just outside town.The old town is a great place to see several historic churches and mansions, such as the beautiful 12th century Church of Santiago, the oldest in the city and the church of Santa Maria del Campo with the Museum of Religious Art within the building.
Surrounding the Old City is the coastal area and The Castle of San Antón stands at the end of the harbour area and houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum. The Tower of Hercules stands on the peninsular and is a symbol of the city. It was built in the 2nd century and is the only working Roman lighthouse in the world. The Acuarium Finisterrae is close by and houses one of the largest aquariums in Spain.
The modern, elegant City Hall is situated in the Plaza de Maria Pita with its porches, galleries and towers it is the nerve centre of the city. The unusual San Carlos Garden can be found in the centre of town.
Shopping
For shoppers there are new department stores alongside small boutiques and gift shops where traditional Galician pottery or jewellery can be bought. The markets are a good way to sample the local culture with a wide variety of local produce and seafood.Eating Out
There are many outdoor bars, restaurants and old taverns to choose from where you can enjoy the local wine and tapas. Specialities include excellent local seafood small crabs, barnacles, spider crabs, Norway lobster and tasty fish recipes and stews.Tourist Information
