Gerona is the capital of the province of the same name and is one of the oldest and most beautiful Catalan cities, with a particularly interesting Jewish Quarter. The city is known as the 'The city of a thousand sieges' and boasts a historical centre with the walled enclosure of La Força Vella.
Attractions
The Cathedral of Gerona is the province's, and perhaps one of the world's, most important Gothic monuments. Built between the 14th and 17th centuries the Gothic nave is its most impressive feature.
Other attractions include the Jewry, the 12th century Arab Baths and Gerona’s many museums including the Cinema Museum, the only one of its kind in Europe; The Cathedral Museum, The Art Museum, the City History Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
Gerona is positioned between the Pyreanean Mountain chain and the Costa Brava so there there is a varied environment to explore including several natural parks.
Shopping
The narrow streets and alleyways are best explored on foot and shopping is a favourite attraction, especially on the busy Carrer Santa Clara.
Nightlife and Eating Out
There is also a good selection of restaurants, bars and cafés in the centre and scattered along La Rambla where you can sample traditonal tapas.
Gerona Airport is located about 12km from the city.
