Santorini

Santorini is the most romantic destination to visit in Greece. The island is the only active volcano in the country and as a result of its last major explosion in 1650 BC there are still gasses coming out of the tiny island of Kameni in the middle of the caldera. As a result of this explosion that brought to an end the Minoan civilisation in nearby Crete, the western side of the island is formed of steep cliffs and all settlements are placed at the edge of the cliff. Moreover, the fact that the local Cycladic architecture is maintained the contrast of whitewashed small houses wedged on a barren landscape makes this island one of the most stunningly beautiful in Greece.

Attractions

There are several attractions in Santorini. Highly recommended is a visit to the volcano, where you can walk to the remains of the crater and see and smell the gasses oozing from the earth. You can combine the visit by local boat with a swim in the deep waters while sampling the amazing view of the caldera.

The archaeological site of Akrotiri in Kamari, offers the chance to view the remains of an old settlement that prospered during the Minoan civilisation and came to an abrupt end when the volcano erupted 3600 years ago.

The villages of Fira and Oia (pronounced Ia) are the most picturesque on the island and offer panoramic views of the caldera. Moreover, Oia is famous for its sunset, where a number of tourists congregate to view and applause it every evening.

All the beaches are located on the east or external side of the island and Colombo and Perissa are the most recommended spots. These beaches have red and black sand because of the volcanic nature of the island.

Shopping

Santorini has been a tourist destination for years and you can choose between local souvenirs in Fira, or really sophisticated and expensive jewellery in Oia. The island also produces very good wine, because of the quality of the soil, the blessing of the volcano. Make sure you return home with some bottles of fine local wine.

Nightlife and Eating Out

The choice here is varied. If you want to have a romantic meal or even propose to your loved one, make sure you make a reservation at the stunning 1800 restaurant in Oia. Truth is it’s going to set you back a few pounds but it’s an experience not to be missed. You can also sample international and Greek cuisine in a range of places, from upmarket restaurants with stunning views to intimate traditional Greek tavernas in some of the villages. Another favourite is Ntomata (tomato in Greek) near the airport. Nightlife in Santorini is mainly situated at Fira and Perissa, where you can find bars and clubs. Yazz and the beach bar of the campsite in Perissa are wonderful settings for a night out with the option of a night swim. Casablanca and Q are the nightlife options in Fira, both set very near to each other with very up to date music.
