Niagara Falls

Possibly the most famous natural landmark in the world, Niagara Falls continues to astound all those who travel to see it. The Canadian waterfall, or Horseshoe Falls, stands at 54 metres high, whereas the American Falls reaches 56 metres. Their stunning beauty and awe inspiring magnitude has been documented by poets and writers continuously. Charles Dickens stated upon visiting in 1842, "Niagara was at once stamped upon my heart, an Image of Beauty, to remain there, changeless and indelible, until its pulses cease to beat, for ever." However, present day holidaymakers are certain to have an even more enjoyable time than Dickens, for the city of Niagara Falls itself has now developed into an exciting and entertaining tourist destination.

Attractions

Of course, all tourists will make it their priority to see the magnificent Falls. Today there are multiple ways of viewing this beautiful area. Visitors can ride a steamboat on the lake and look up at the waterfalls, or there is the possibility of a helicopter ride around the area, allowing holidaymakers to appreciate a birds eye view of the natural splendour. The Journey Behind the Falls can be found in the Table Rock House Plaza and provides visitors with the opportunity to see the Falls from behind. Two tunnels can be explored, each allowing patrons to get closer to the Falls than they previously imagined; waterproof coats are provided! Those hoping to learn more about the Falls should visit the local IMAX Theatre, which shows the fascinating documentary Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic.

When holidaymakers have explored the Falls from every angle, they can then sample some of the other attractions in the area. Niagara Falls is not the only example of natural splendour in the vicinity. The Niagara Falls Bird Aviary boasts a substantial rainforest and over 400 beautiful birds. Visitors will not want to miss the opportunity to explore this location and witness some of the most incredible birds in the world. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture is also a popular attraction. The many carefully cultivated gardens are closely maintained and cared for, ensuring that all who visit will be taken aback by the range of plants within this one hundred acre site. An arboretum commemorates some of the magnificent trees found in Canada, ideal for those unable to explore the country's forestry for themselves. All will enjoy beholding the many different varieties in the Rose Garden, which contains unprecedented beauty. The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is a testament to one of the most beautiful animals in the world. Hundreds of butterflies are cared for in this site, amongst carefully sustained shrubbery and plants which were specifically selected for those creatures inhabiting the conservatory. Some may be lucky enough to witness butterflies emerging from chrysalides in the Emergence area. The outside garden has been carefully constructed in the hope of attracting Canada's resident butterflies to the location. Niagaras Floral Clock is another popular attraction. One of the largest clocks in the world, the face is covered in a multitude of flowers, which are changed twice every season.

In 1812 the area was host to an epic stream of battles. This war is commemorated at the Battle Ground Hotel Museum, which is located on the site of the battlefield. Visitors can experience what life during this period was like, as well as learn more about the war which engulfed the area.
