Serving as the capital of Bahrain until 1923, Muharraq is situated upon one of the kingdom’s many diminutive islands. Measuring only 21 square kilometres, the island which bears the same name as the town may be small, but it is by no means insignificant. As well as housing the country’s former capital Muharraq Island is also home to Bahrain International Airport.
Within the maze-like back alleys of Muharraq town lie several buildings of historical note such as the Beit Sheikh Isa bin Ali and the Beit Seyadi. Quala’at Arad, a fort built by the invading Portuguese in the fifteenth century is situated on the outskirts of the town. It has recently undergone a masterful restoration. There are also many handmade dhows (traditional Arabic sailing boats) on show along the coast.
Muharraq is no more than a 15 minute car journey from the centre of Manama. The two are connected by the Sheikh Hamad Causeway which runs between Muharraq Island and Bahrain Island. Most visitors to Bahrain stay in Manama however there is enough to see in the old town of Muharraq to warrant a very pleasant daytrip.
