Peterborough
Although developed in the late 1960s as a New Town, Peterborough has a history dating back over 3000 years. A site of great national importance for its gothic architecture and archaeological sites and surrounded by the fens, Peterborough is a thriving city offering a unique experience for its visitors. Whether you have come for its large covered beer festival, a trip along the river or an exploration of its historic sights, there is plenty to see and do in this city which combines the best of old and new.Attractions
The most striking building in Peterborough is its unusual and dramatic Norman cathedral. Catherine of Aragon is buried here and its West wing is often considered to be one of the most magnificent examples of gothic architecture in the world. From a distance, Elton Hall resembles a castle, while in fact it is another example of gothic architecture in the city. Inside the hall there are beautifully restored period rooms and a 15th Century fine art collection. The library contains Henry VIII’s prayer book.
Flag Fen is a 3000-year-old Bronze Age settlement and is one of the most important examples of its kind in Europe. Also of interest is the City Museum at Priestgate House and the Nene Valley Railway.
For some fresh air, head to Peterborough’s 2000 river-side acres of meadows, or take a riverboat ride along the Nene. Peterborough is surrounded by lovely traditional English villages which can be easily explored along the Green Wheel Cycle Network.
