San Sebastian, also known as Donostia is the capital of Guipuzcoa province and lies just 21km west of the French border within the Basque Country. It is surrounded by green mountains and on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. It is a mix of modern districts, fisherman's houses and a historical quarter making it an interesting and beautiful city.Attractions
There are three beaches in San Sebastian, La Concha, Ondarreta and La Zurriola with La Concha considered one of the most beautiful city beaches in Europe. There is a forth seasonal beach on the offshore Santa Clara Islandin the centre of La Concha Bay which a ferry service runs across to during the summer.
The old quarter, Parte Vieja is a combination of narrow streets, hidden plazas and medieval houses in contrast to the modern shops, wide boulevards, cafes and restaurants of the city. The Plaza de la Constitución was once the city Hall and is now home to the Municipal Library.
Some historical sites include: The Castillo de la Santa Cruz de la Mota standing on Mount Urgull; the Cathedral with its tall spire which can be seen throughout the city; the Churches of San Vicente and Santa MarÃa del Coro in the oldest part of town and San Telmo Museum with a mix of archaeological, collections and art.
There are several parks throughout the city offering wide green spaces, fountains and manor houses.
Shopping
Traditional Basque products such as cotton shirts and berets can be purchased in the cities shops and the best shopping area is Paseo de Muelle.Nightlife
The nightlife in San Sebastian is lively and based mainly in the bars and restaurants of the old quarter with local seafood a speciality. There are several theatres, cinemas and a casino providing entertainment also.Tourist Information
